We have been learning all about the numbers 7, 8, and 9. As we have been learning more about each number, students have been practicing writing each number, counting collections of objects, and finding matches for each number. They have also been working in their math journals and are beginning to complete these pages more independently!

Reading Workshop
Over the last two weeks we completed six mini-lessons to finish our launch unit. In each mini-lesson, students were taught a new strategy that good readers use as they select and read books. Students learned how to take care of the books in our classroom library. We practiced holding our books with two hands while carefully looking through our book bins, turning the pages at the top right corner, and returning the books to our bins right side up with the covers facing forward.

We also learned how to choose books from our library by following these three steps.

Book Selections for the Morning Class

Book Selections for the Afternoon Class
We learned how to use connecting words such as once, next, then, after that, later, and finally to help us tell a story as we read through the books in our book bins. We also "buzzed" about our favorite books as we learned how to talk about the books we love with our classmates. We used the steps below to help us tell the exciting events in our books!

LMC
In the LMC, the students have been learning about Henry Cole, the author of The Nest for Celeste. They learned that Henry Cole is an author and an illustrator who has worked on nearly 150 books for children. The students used the app Chatterpix to make one of Henry Cole's characters, Eddie the Bully, talk about ways to be kind. They also used Pebble Go on the computers to do some research about mice.

All About Me
We enjoyed learning about several of our kindergarten friends over the past two weeks. The morning class loved learning all about Patrick and some of his favorite things. We learned that Patrick loves Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles, and he enjoys playing with his collection of cars. He also loves fall and celebrating Halloween. Patrick's favorite movie is Toy Story, and he loves the Minions from Despicable Me. He also loves coloring and spending time with his family!

A big thank you to Alexa's neighbor, Grandma Jackie, for coming in to read!
We loved this spooky and funny story!

Weekly News (Oct. 2-6)

Here's a peek at what we've been learning this week!

Math
In math this week, we learned about the numbers 6 and 7. We practiced writing these numbers, counting collections of objects, and we even learned a new partner game this week called "Snap!" In this game, students compare two cards to see if the cards have the same or a different number of objects. If the cards show a different number, two new cards are drawn. If the cards show the same number of objects, the students call out "Snap!" The student who says "snap" first, takes the cards. The student with the most cards at the end is the winner!  Here we are learning the game in the picture below.

Jolly Phonics
We learned the following three sounds this week. Next week students will bring home a ring of the Jolly Phonics sounds we have learned in their blue book bags. These cards will be a good way to practice and review our sounds at home.

/g/ as in "giggle"
/o/ as in "octopus"
/u/ as in "umbrella"

Reading Workshop
This week the students learned the following phrases during reading workshop time to help them keep their conversation going during turn-and-talk time.

We also learned that authors use special "marks" to help readers know how to read their work. Using the poem My Big Book, we practiced "reading" the punctuation marks to help us read with good expression.

Design Challenge
This week Mrs. Wasik, our advanced learning facilitator, came into our room to read Peter's Chair by Ezra Jack Keats. In this story, Peter has a problem--he needs a new chair after he has to give up his chair for his new baby sister. After reading the story, the students worked together to create a chair for Peter. First, the groups had to work together to identify the problem. Then they had to come up with a plan to solve this problem, and finally they worked together to create a chair that Peter would like. Take a peek at us in action below!

LMC
This week in the LMC we learned all about our One Book, One School author---Henry Cole. The students used the Nearpod app to learn about the life and work of Henry Cole. They even had a chance to draw their own version of Celeste the mouse from the story.
